This business currently generates about $2B in revenue for Microsoft with tremendous opportunity ahead, given how the industry wide  advertising is shifting to digital media. Join and help take our digital advertising to the next level to compete against Google and Yahoo with our initiatives in Audience Intelligence. Our group is chartered to develop an industry leading targeting system for all our ad products and services. Effective targeting helps an advertiser reach their core audience and will drive high value propositions to  the end customers. We as a company is betting on this initiative to differentiate our advertising offerings to our customers and to further grow our advertising revenue.

We are seeking an experienced taxonomist to provide thought leadership in taxonomy, classification, and metadata management. Audience  Intelligence enables the discovery and inference of user profiles, intent and interaction while respecting privacy and trust, with the  ultimate goal of maximizing benefits for users, advertisers and publishers. Our focus spans all types of digital advertising such as search, display and emerging media including mobile, gaming, video on demand, and IPTV.

Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Execute a comprehensive strategy for incorporating taxonomies and metadata schemas into Microsoft’s Audience Intelligence solutions
  • Serve as a domain expert and liaison to internal partner groups, champion the implementation of group-wide standards in taxonomy and metadata, influencing relevant decisions within specific business  units
  • Define and implement standards and processes for taxonomy development, maintenance of centralized schemas, and metadata management
  • Provide training data for automated and manual classification, scrutinize data quality to enable quality automated classification
  • Define the requirements of internal and external business and technical teams for taxonomy, metadata, and classification management
  • Drive technical requirements into current and upcoming taxonomy and classification tools
  • Continuously enhance the overall information retrieval experience through research and analysis
  • Benchmark, review, and respond to customer and internal feedback

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Library/Information Science, knowledge management, information management, linguistics, or related field or equivalent experience
  • Understanding of Library and Information Science concepts and principles and their business applications
  • Experience working with research, engineering, and business teams to implement taxonomies into production systems
  • Experience managing third parties to deliver specific taxonomies and content

Audience Intelligence (AI) is the science and engineering of data-driven understanding of online users, with the ultimate goal of improving user productivity and marketing efficiency. As Microsoft makes increasingly stronger investment in search, advertising, and online content (MSN), understanding users plays a pivotal role in helping us improving our products and services for users, advertisers, and content publishers. We harness ideas and techniques from a wide range of fields such as information extraction and retrieval, categorization, natural language understanding, big data management and mining, market segmentation, user modeling, adaptation, and personalization. Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Identify, research, and build V1 software technology and product prototypes designed to improve the Audience Intelligence business
  • Work with the rest of the engineering group to ensure smooth handoff and clear post-V1 roadmap
  • May need to function in a traditional developer role for periods of time
  • Rapidly gain and continuously improve knowledge of Audience Intelligence business and engineering

Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of industry software development experience
  • Solid academic and/or industry knowledge and hands-on experience in one or more areas: information extraction and retrieval, categorization, natural language understanding, big data management and mining, market segmentation, user modeling, adaptation, and personalization.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Superior communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Attention to detail, including desire to write beautiful code
  • BS, MS degree or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or equivalent
